[New]  Mental health first aid in remote areas

Wilderness Mental Health First Aid is designed to enhance mental health intervention skills in isolated regions.  Through practical learning activities and role-playing, participants will be able to develop their skills in mental health intervention and first aid in isolated regions.

This training is aimed at professionals working with workers in isolated regions or who supervise a variety of activities in isolated regions (outdoors, adventure tourism, training, research, etc.).

Objectives :

Identify, analyze and assess customer needs through fictitious clinical situations inspired by real-life situations experienced in the field.
Experiment with and apply mental health first aid tools in isolated areas.
Integrate preferred approaches and postures into professional practice.


Type et duration :   Depending on the clientele, this training program can be adapted to suit participants' availability and specific needs.  

Introduction to mental health in isolated regions (4h asynchronous online)
Mental health first aid for healthcare professionals (2 or 3 days)


Training content :

Social determinants of health and the mental health continuum.
Physiological and psychological aspects of mental health.
Risk management and mitigation in crisis situations.
Intervention approaches and strategies adapted to your area of expertise.


Prerequisites:    Be a healthcare professional

 Oxygen therapy 

This course designed for diving enthusiasts combines a CPR-AED module for the public, Level A (Adult and child), and the notions of oxygen administration.  The participant will learn to understand the vital systems of the human body to be able to respond to diving and/or submersion incidents. 

Course Type: In person

Duration: 4h (oxygen administration only) or 8h (full course))

Prerequisite:
- Oxygen administration module only (4 hours):
have a valid CPR certification

- Full module (oxygen administration and CPR-AED):  None

Sutures and  wound care training (SUT)

The Sutures and Injections module is a 4-hour hands-on workshop offered within the SIRIUSMEDx specialty course series. 

Supervised by a physician, this advanced workshop for isolated care includes: Suturing, Muscle Injections. This module is a hands-on refresher workshop in which participants learn or review their suturing technique. The module does not, however, allow a non-healthcare professional to perform reserved medical procedures such as muscle injections or suturing at the end of the 4 hours. There is no evaluation or exam at the end of this module.

 Safety, Risk Management and Rescue : 

Risk management (RM)
  • The Wilderness Risk Management training is a module offering individuals and organizations the possibility to learn the essential tools to create or improve their Risk Management strategies. It is a course with discussion and focused group exercises to apply the theory of risk management to concrete plans, documentation, and actions useable within the participants' workplace. 


  • Topics include risk management culture and objectives, analysis of current structure in place, legal aspects, risk analysis, emergency response plans, and action planning. 


  • The first day of the training focuses on the individuals in charge of developing and maintaining a risk management program while the second day is dedicated to training field staff to apply and contribute to the risk management vision.

Search and Rescue (SR1, SR2)

Search and Rescue training is available in basic (SR1) or advanced (SR2) versions. 

The participant will be educated on the legal implications of a SAR operation in the field, before being trained on the search operations themselves and the basics of navigation (GPS, map, compass). Basic training is intended for any volunteer participating in such an operation, while advanced training is appropriate for coordinators.

Duration: 8h (RS1), 16h (RS2)

  [New]   Ice Safety

We offer safety and rescue training for people working on ice and in cold water.

The duration of this training can vary according to the specific needs of your organization.

A-Awareness level

This training is a safety awareness course for working on ice.  The aim is to make workers aware of the need to prepare the site prior to intervention.

Contents :

 Explaining the elements that lead to a rescue on ice or in cold water
 Gather information on the incident
 Determine the human and material resources required for the rescue
 Implement safety measures
 Provide support to operational rescuers and technicians

B- Operation level

Rescue a victim from the shore :

 Analyze the incident scene
 Set up the intervention site and prepare the necessary equipment for the intervention
 Provide support to technicians
 Remove victim from shore
 Prepare and deploy first aid and evacuation equipment


C- Technician level

Rescue a victim on ice or in water:

 Move on ice
 Approach and retrieve victim (on ice)
 Enter water and remove victim
 Prepare and deploy first aid and evacuation equipment


Duration: from 1.5 to 32 hours, depending on your organization's needs



  Bears, predators and firearms :

Bear Awareness and Safety (BA)
Participants in the Bear Awareness and Safety Course learn that preparation is the key to preventing dangerous encounters!  They will learn to recognize habitats and hazards as well as different species, plan their trips and observe and understand the language of bears.

Course type: In-Person

Duration: 8h

Prerequisite None, but it is recommended that the participants take the Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course either before or after this course.

 Predators and animals at risk: safety and prevention

Wildlife Predator Defence training provides those who work in remote regions with an in-depth understanding of the habitat and behavior of wild animals in various regions of Canada and the North.

Through theoretical and practical sessions, participants learn to anticipate, prevent and respond to encounters with potential predators.

Special emphasis is given to hazard evaluation, risk management, prevention of injury, and practice.

Course type: In-Person

Firearms: safety and practice (SP)

The FA course participant has covered all aspects related carrying of firearms in a wildlife defense context.  The course curriculum includes firearms manipulation and use, basic safety instructions, wildlife detection and observation, firearms users’ responsibilities, storage and transportation of firearms, and practical shooting exercises.

Prerequisite :  Bear Awareness and Safety (BS) or Wildlife Predators Defence


Survival, Readiness and Orientation

Wilderness Readiness 

  • This practical custom program is designed to convey the fundamentals of preparing for work in remote settings. Participants will acquire a basic understanding of wilderness readiness and the skills to deal with a variety of wilderness emergencies. Course material is taught through discussions, demonstrations, practice and simulation.

Survival in the forest (SF)
  • We offer this training in 2 versions:


    1- Practical experience: 1 day


    This basic survival training course is an introduction that will provide participants with the fundamental knowledge of forest survival and the skills needed to deal with a variety of emergency situations in the wilderness to ensure their safety and survival.


    Training objectives include learning survival priorities, hazard assessment and risk management, as well as understanding the psychology of survival and stress. Participants will develop skills in decision-making, appropriate survival behaviours, and identifying and managing obstacles such as injuries, dehydration and wild animals. You'll also learn the key stages of an emergency survival situation, signalling techniques, emergency shelter construction and fire lighting..

    2- Experiential: 2 days including a night in the forest


    This hands-on forest survival training, which includes building a shelter for the night, is specially designed for people whose work regularly takes them to remote and isolated areas.
    This intensive two-day course offers complete immersion in the techniques and knowledge needed to survive and work effectively in the wilderness.

    Participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice essential skills such as shelter construction, foraging for food and water, fire lighting, navigation, first aid, as well as risk management and forest safety.

    Duration: 1 or 2 days, depending on customer needs

Arctic survival (AS)
  • The Arctic Survival (AS) course participant acquires knowledge related to the management of accidents and illnesses inherent to the wilderness and Arctic environment. Topics are covered with an emphasis on accident prevention, practical skills, decision-making, and management of environmental conditions. Through hands-on workshops, participants will also cover the basic components of safety in wilderness areas, survival and trip planning.


    Course type: In-person


    Duration: 8h or 16h days, according to the client's needs.

GPS and Navigation (GPS)

This custom program is specially designed for geologists, researchers, and field staff who require a solid foundation in the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) technology.


The program involves practical exercises and outdoor activities.


Students will be provided with GPS units for the duration of the course, as well as instruction manuals, workbooks, and all teaching materials.

Map and Compass (MC)

The map and compass training is a program tailored to your needs and is specially designed for professionals in the field. 

The participant will learn map reading and how to find their way with a map and compass, in case the technological tools are not available or become non-functional. The program requires practical exercises and outdoor activities.

Students will be provided with maps and compasses for the duration of the course, as well as instruction manuals, participant workbooks and teaching materials.
