Sirius Wilderness Medecine (SIRIUSMEDx) is a Canadian company founded in 1990 that specializes in providing medical support services in remote regions. Over the years, we have become the largest provider of remote area safety training in Canada!
Under the supervision of a manager or site supervisor, the Boat-based Site Monitor ensures a constant presence on a body of water to prevent incidents and respond quickly in case of emergency. He/she monitors workers operating on or near the water, ensures compliance with water safety measures, and implements rescue and first aid procedures in the event of a fall, illness, or accident.
Required profile
- Have experience in a similar role on industrial sites in remote areas;
- Hold an ASP Construction certification – Health and Safety on Construction Sites
- Hold a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC);
- Completion of First Responder Water Rescue (SNPI) training – An asset
- Hold an Advanced Wilderness First Aid certification (80h) – An asset
- Demonstrated adaptability, initiative and resourcefulness;
- Being passionate for providing care in remote areas.
Job description
- Monitoring and Prevention
- Maintain an active presence on the water in a boat, positioned as determined by the Construction Site Prevention Program or the Rescue Plan;
- Continuously observe construction activities taking place near or on the water;
- Quickly identify any risks or unsafe behavior and notify the Health & Safety officer or site supervisor;
- Ensure that aquatic work zones are secured and free of hazardous obstacles;
- Emergency Response
- Respond immediately in the event of a worker falling into the water or in case of a water-related incident.;
- Carry out rescue maneuvers according to established protocols (recovery, assistance in boarding, safe extraction).;
- Administer first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), until workplace first responders or emergency services take over;
- Coordinate emergency evacuation to land-based medical teams;
- Equipment Maintenance and Preparation
- Perform daily checks on the boat, engine, and safety equipment (life jackets, rescue lines, buoys, first aid kit, etc.);
- Ensure the availability and proper functioning of all rescue equipment;
- Report any defects and carry out basic maintenance as required.
- Communication and Coordination;
- Maintain clear and effective radio communication at all times with the site supervisor, Health & Safety officers, and managers;
- Participate in daily safety briefings and simulation exercises;
- Provide incident or observation reports when required
